NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — North Haven Police are putting out a warning, saying that thieves are tracking deliveries with expensive electronic devices.

“Unreal. I couldn’t believe it. I was flabbergasted,” Ian Sancho, who confronted a porch pirate, said.

Thieves targeted a brand new iPad and iPhone delivered to Sancho’s front porch twice in just two days. Both incidents were caught on camera.

The video below aired on Aug. 28.

“With the two items, it was over three thousand dollars,” Sancho said. “Very shocking because this never happens in this neighborhood.”

The first happened a week ago.

“I saw the FedEx driver deliver the package and three minutes after that I saw a gentlemen standing over there by the car, walked over the rocks with a hood over his head, picks up the package and left,” Sancho said.

The theft took less than a minute.

After speaking to police, Sancho called AT&T to disable the iPhone and iPad and ask for replacements.

This time Sancho made sure he was home during the delivery window, but he wasn’t the only one waiting.

“There’s a gentleman in front of the house with a hood on,” Sancho said. “I went downstairs and confronted him. I asked him what he’s doing in the neighborhood. He says to me, ‘oh my car broke down.’ I said where’s your car and he can’t tell me and as I’m talking to him he’s walking away.”

When Sancho said he was going to call the police, the thief ran, and so did Sancho so he could get a look at the suspect’s vehicle. He and his neighbor were able to tell police a description and which direction it was going.

Shortly after North Haven Police said they arrested Heriberto Perez-Cabral. The 26-year-old New York man was charged with fourth degree criminal attempt to commit larceny and was given a $2,500 bond.

North Haven Police said there have been a rash of similar crimes in the region recently.

“I spoke to the FedEx company and AT&T and they are telling me it’s getting worse. Apparently, what they’re doing is they are getting the tracking numbers from one of the companies and then they are following the trucks,” Sancho said. “Make sure you have a camera and make sure you know when your package is coming.”
