BELMONT COUNTY, OH (WTRF) — Last week’s flooding in the Ohio Valley came with a very extensive cleanup stage beginning this past weekend.

Several areas in Belmont County saw rising waters flooding into homes and businesses last week and now the cleanup is underway.

In Powhatan Point, several businesses and properties are continuing to clear out debris from basements and ground-level floors.

The President of the Powhatan Point City Council, Michael Beaver says the cleanup process has been a huge success throughout the weekend and into today. He says the support from surrounding communities and the county itself has been tremendous.

The main focus for many people was clearing out flood water from their basements and Beaver says the county was with everyone every step of the way.

”Mainly the basements had flood waters in there and when the basements were pumped, it’s always best and the people they pretty much know get their garden hoses down there, hose the walls down as the mud is still wet. Before the floodwaters even hit, as the floodwaters were rising, the Belmont County EMA came in and spoke with us and and asked us what we needed and told us what was available to us.”

Beaver says several organizations reached out to their community and others in the county to donate various cleaning supplies to help those who were affected.

He says the areas that were hit the hardest in their community are very close to being fully recovered from the floods.
