A historic football field will get the opportunity to shine bright under the lights for the first time in its 90 year history.

Nelson Field in Bellaire, home to the Bellaire Big Reds, will have lights installed at the stadium for the first time.

In a memo to the Big Red community, Superintendent Derrick McAfee said they are concerned that the lack of lights in the future will lead to the inability to host OHSAA playoff games on Nelson Field.

“While we are always respectful and protective of our traditions, you entrust us to keep an eye on the future. Over the past few years, we have made significant capital investments in Nelson Field, the thought of us not being able to use it is simply impossible to ignore,” McAfee said in a statement.

McAfee also said with the football season starting several weeks earlier that many spectators, student athletes and band members for medical attention due to heat related issues.

“While we acknowledge that this decision will be viewed as controversial to some and common sense to others, please understand that the most important factor in this decision is what’s best for the children of Bellaire,” McAfee stated.

The Big Reds have historically only played their home games on Saturday afternoon.
