WEST VIRGINIA (WTRF) — West Virginia Senate Bill 568 has taken effect, updating school attendance policies throughout the state.

Regarding absentees, each student is allowed 10 unexcused absences.

If he or she is out sick and have a doctor’s note, the note must be turned in within three days of receiving it.

West Virginia House of Delegates Shawn Fluharty says the bill also includes a portion of Jessie’s Law, which excuses absences related to pregnancy.

Fluharty says all parents should be aware of these new changes.

“You’re capped at 10 unless you have a doctor’s note, which if you provide it, you need to provide it within three days or else it becomes an unexcused absence. It’s just a matter of trying to provide accountability, whether it be the student or the parents within our school system and also provide any necessary help that may be needed during that time.”

Fluharty says he thinks this bill will help improve the education system as a whole moving forward.
