WERITON, W.Va. (WTRF) — A massive expansion will soon be underway that will double the size of the Water Treatment Plant in Weirton.

A 24-month construction phase is officially underway at the Water Treatment Plant in Weirton to expand the plant and improve the quality of water.

The city held a groundbreaking on Tuesday for the $44 million project.

The expansion project will increase the plant’s capacity from 4 million gallons of water per day to 8 million gallons and improve water quality and reliability for residents.

The project was made possible thanks to $22.47 million in Congressionally Directed Spending from the EPA along with other contributions from the Governor’s office, the West Virginia Water Development Authority and many others.

“This is huge for Weirton in terms of the expansion of water for personal and residential use, but also for the ability to expand economically to create more jobs, to bring more businesses in.”

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito – (R) WV

“I give credit to the city of Weirton and all the folks involved in the local utilities because these are big ideas, but they’re here because they’re going to be successful. Revitalizing communities along the Ohio River is a major priority.”

Adam Ortiz – Administrator for EPA Mid-Atlantic Region

The project is expected to create 150 construction jobs and is set to be completed by March of 2026.
