HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Two firefighters were hurt battling a two-alarm fire that damaged 24 units at an apartment complex in Henrico's West End Friday afternoon.

Crews were called to a two-story apartment on Chase Gayton Circle, near the intersection of Gaskins Road and Quioccasin Road, for a report of a fire at 1:35 p.m.

"Henrico firefighters knew it was a pretty significant fire when they were responding to the scene and saw a large plume of black smoke coming from the Chase Gayton apartment complex," reporter Jon Burkett said. "That's when the fire chief says they triggered a second alarm to move more resources to this area."

When the first crews arrived, they found a woman inside the building that was on fire. She had minor burns and was treated for her injuries, according to Henrico County Division of Fire Assistant Chief Mike Roth.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to an area hospital, Roth said.

Officials said the fire damaged 24 units at the complex. Twelve of those apartments were destroyed in the fire and 12 others have significant smoke and water damage.

Red Cross officials arrived to assist displaced residents.

"The apartment complex is working to move displaced occupants into new units," Roth said.

The blaze was marked under control around 4 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
