TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The sign outside the Historic Indian Theatre will be taken down later this week.

That’s according to Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer, who alongside the Vigo Capital Improvement Board, has been working to revitalize the location. The sign will be taken down on Thursday morning.

The new sign will be nearly identical– with an LED display– and is funded by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. Switzer said it cost about $282,000 and was funded through the Innkeeper’s tax, which comes from hotel stays.

Switzer said this is just the start of upgrades coming at the property.

‘It’s a beautiful theatre’ hundreds gather inside historic Vigo location

“We’re about ⅔ of the way through a feasibility study, we hired a consultant out of Indianapolis to help us with,” he said. “We hope to have that study done by the end of June or early July. The next step for the theatre itself is we’re going to create [a request for proposal] for the roof of the canopy to be replaced.”

The intersection of 7th and Ohio Streets will be closed briefly while work is being done– Switzer estimated it would be from about 8:30 a.m. to noon. He said he is excited for what’s next at the location.

“You want to make it more enticing for the younger generation, make it easier and more accessible for people and you want to have signage available 24/7 marketing other things in the community,” he said. “We just want to make sure we invest our money well in this theatre and bring it back to life.”

The old sign will eventually be displayed at the Vigo County History Center.
