CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana Department of Education announced that 20 schools have been newly certified as leaders in STEM education, including two in Clay County.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

“STEM certified schools are committed to providing high-quality, engaging experiences that not only support students in developing problem-solving skills, but also prepare them for careers in emerging industries,” Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner said. “Ensuring every student in Indiana can meet the challenges and opportunities of a constantly evolving workforce begins with high-quality STEM education, and these schools are leaning in to meet the needs of Hoosier students.”

The STEM certification program was created in 2015. While more than 100 schools statewide hold STEM certification among this year’s additions were Meridian Street Elementary School and Van Buren Elementary School of the Clay Community Schools district.

Other schools mentioned from the Wabash Valley include Loogootee High School, which achieved a repeat certification and will now be certified for an additional five years.

While not achieving STEM certification, Linton-Stockton Elementary School was noted to have demonstrated significant progress toward becoming STEM certified.
