SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — In honor of Memorial Day, the Sullivan American Legion will have a flag placement event. It will take place on May 24th at 9.a.m at Center Ridge Cemetery.

A news release states the following:

Placing flags at cemeteries on Memorial Day holds profound significance as it serves to honor and remember the sacrifices of military personnel who have died in service to their country. This tradition embodies respect, gratitude, and national pride, ensuring that the memories of fallen heroes are kept alive in the hearts and minds of the living.

The act of placing flags is a powerful symbol of unity and collective remembrance. Each flag represents a life given in the name of freedom and serves as a visual reminder of the cost of liberty. It reinforces the understanding that these individuals’ sacrifices were pivotal in securing and maintaining the freedoms enjoyed by all citizens.

Sullivan Mayor J.D. Wilson said that this is a great way to honor our local heroes.

“It shows how much we appreciate the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom here in the United States and specifically here in Sullivan as we have many heroes that have served, and we look forward to it every year as it is a special day,” he said.
