TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With the school year getting underway, Vigo County leaders are asking motorists to be careful.

Vigo County Sheriff Derek Fell advises that drivers need to be ready during their morning commutes.

“It is important to be cautious when driving around in residential neighborhoods, school zones, and being alert for frequent bus stops,” he said. “Obviously, also obey all the traffic laws and maybe leave for work a little earlier so you aren’t in as big of a rush. We just want to make sure that there are no accidents, and we get off to a safe school year.”

He said law enforcement will be out enforcing these areas as well.

“We will have extra deputies throughout the entire community looking for violations that they may come across in reference to violations of school safety,” said Fell.

The Coordinator of Safety and Security for the school corporation Kurt Brinegar said motorists must watch out for an influx of students on sidewalks and even in roadways.

“The school buses are out which means the children are at the bus stops,” he said. “Please be aware that the children will be out and walking on the streets to get to their bus stops, so be aware of that when you are out driving.”

He said it may take a little more time, but officials say it will all be worth it if everyone gets to school and then gets home safe and sound.

“When you see a stop sign extended on a school bus, please make sure you stop for that bus,” he said. “Be patient with the bus and the bus driver as well. You will get to your location when you need to just like everyone else, but the bus needs to get their safely with the children.”

Brinegar said that the busiest times of the day will be 7-9 a.m. and 2-4 p.m.
