TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A group of Indiana State Students are getting the chance to have their art displayed in the Turman Gallery on ISU’s campus.

The “Summer Term Art Research Scholarship” or “STARS” is an exhibition that celebrates a select a group of ISU’s Art and Design students who were awarded scholarships by the Center for Student Research and Creativity. The “STARS” scholarship provides funding to each student to produce artwork during the summer months.

During this time student got to experience what it means to be an independent artist as they work without the guidance of course assignments.

“I’m really impressed. It’s very difficult, and I think they realized this. When you’re not in an academic setting, to actually have the discipline and perseverance to create a cohesive body of work. I think that each student here, in their own voice and with different materials, really succeeded to make that happen,” said ISU Gallery Director Tanmaya Bingham.

Also on display is the Faculty Show Exhibition. The exhibition is held every other year and is put on by ISU Art and Design faculty. Bingham said this is chance for faculty to show off what each member has been working on and creating during their free time.

“I love it because we interface with each other here on a day to day basis, but I rarely got to actually see what they’re doing behind the scenes. So, it’s a really nice reveal, I think for all of us, to actually reengage with each other’s personal research and creative process,” said Bingham.

The STARS Exhibition will be open to the public during a reception on September 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Turman Gallery in the Fine Arts building. There will also be a reception for the Faculty Exhibition on August 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Yang Family University Art Gallery in the Landini Center for Fine and Performing Arts building. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
