More chances for rain ahead, heavy rain in downpours

Tonight features showers likely in our region. Many of these showers will be on the light side, which will be beneficial in helping relieve drought issues ongoing in our region. It’s going to take a few rounds of healthy showers to really make a dent on that front, but every little bit counts! Some showers will be capable of producing downpours that could drop some locally heavy rainfall. Temperatures will drop back into the mid 60s with patchy fog possible after midnight.

Wednesday will be unsettled at times, as our stalled frontal boundary remains nearly directly over our region. Rounds of showers and storms, some of which could be heavy, along with a lot of cloud cover will keep temperatures held down into the mid 70s in what will be a dreary day overall. The Weather Prediction Center has placed our regional in a level one marginal risk for flooding as a result of the potential for training downpours in the area.

Thursday’s rain chances continue to be high despite our stationary front fizzling down to our south. However, a cold front will push into the region from the north. This will bring much nicer weather in store for the end of the work week and into the weekend but a few scattered showers and storms are a good bet Thursday as our front slides through. A strong storm or two can’t be ruled out, with damaging wind gusts being our primary threat – however this threat is pretty low overall. Highs temperatures will be in the mid 70s.

Friday finally dries us out a good bit, as high pressure noses in from the north across the Great Lakes and provides a little drop in humidity for us. An isolated shower still can’t be ruled out in our southern counties, but most will be dry with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s.

Saturday is also pretty dry overall with just an isolated chance for a brief shower or two with Thursday’s cold front stalling down to our south across the Virginia/North Carolina border. Partly sunny skies are expected with highs in the low to mid 80s.

Sunday provides mostly sunny skies with high pressure nearly directly overhead, with high temperatures in the mid 80s.

Monday sees the return of the humidity as high pressure slides east. This will create the risk for afternoon scattered showers and storms with the combination of heat and humidity. High temperatures will be in the mid 80s.

Tuesday continues to see the risk for scattered downpours in the afternoon with summertime heat and humidity. High temperatures will once again be in the mid 80s.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, it’s a continued unsettled pattern. This pattern is good in terms of trying to improve drought conditions in the region, but it also will help keep temperatures from being any hotter – we have a pretty warm air mass in place next week but the abundant showers will keep high temperatures held down into the 80s. Wednesday looks to provide our hottest temperatures in the 10 day forecast, with only isolated shower chances and highs in the mid 80s. Thursday looks wet with scattered storms likely with a front crossing, which will linger into Friday. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 80s each day.
