    Residents of Wilson Street in Beckley are asking when it is legal to fire a gun in public, after neighborhood incident

    BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Beckley Police Department officials confirmed to 59News that a female resident of Wilson Street shot to death a stray dog on the street, which is residential, earlier this month.

    Some of the Wilson Street neighbors have gone on social media to state that they believe the gunfire could have placed people in harm’s way.

    Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield said on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, that it is illegal to fire a gun on a city street, except in cases of self-defense or when the shooter is defending another person.

    Officials have stated that the female who shot the dog on Wilson Street was not charged because she believed the dog was a threat.
