ATHENS, WV (WVNS) — Kaleen Fisher, a junior at Concord University, was awarded the first Lisa Blankenship Memorial Scholarship.

Raised in Meadow Bridge, Fisher is pursuing a degree in psychology and is pairing it with a minor in social work. Her goal after her program is completed is to attain a master’s degree in psychology.

The awarded scholarship will be presented to Fisher during the University of Charleston versus Concord University football game on September 28. Lisa Blankenship’s family encourages those who have contributed to the scholarship to go.

As a proud member of the Concord University cheerleading team, I have the amazing opportunity to represent our school, and support our tea at games and events while boosting school spirit. In addition to the financial support for my education, this scholarship inspires me to embody the values that Lisa Blankenship stood for: leadership, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. I’m truly grateful and determined to make the most of this opportunity by continuing to contribute positively to the university and community in honor of Lisa’s legacy.

Blankenship provided inspiration to students and coaches, serving as a sorority survivor as well. She was greatly admired by the Concord community in her time there, but passed away in February 2012. The scholarship fund was established by her family to preserve the legacy and is the first endowed scholarship at the university aimed at cheerleaders as they earn their degrees.

My family and I are excited to be able to award the Lisa Blankenship Memorial Scholarship this fall. We would like to thank everyone who has made this a reality, especially those who have generously donated to the scholarship fund.
