Soggy Labor Day Weekend will help drought conditions ahead of cooler temps next week

    By Bradley Wells,

Friday will be a muggy and warm day with temps rising into the upper 80s. Dew points in the oppressive zone will give us that late summer feel. Remember to stay hydrated especially if you plan on being outside for most of the day. With the heat and humidity of the day, a few pop-up showers and thunderstorms are expected for the late afternoon and early evening.

Similar to Thursday, not all will see rain but those that do will want to watch for street flooding, numerous lightning strikes, and small hail. The bulk of the severe weather risk for today is centered towards the southeastern corner of West Virginia towards Virginia.

Tonight scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to roam through midnight. Again, in a hit and miss fashion, most of our Friday evening plans will be in good shape with temps remaining mild in the 70s. Once the showers fade, temps drop into the mid and upper 60s for lows.

Saturday morning will be a humid and mild one with temps in the upper 60s. Heat and humidity build in for the afternoon with highs in the upper 80s. A cold front towards the west will spark a few showers and thunderstorms for the afternoon with heavy, widespread showers and storms expected late afternoon and early evening. Outdoor plans will be interrupted with the cold front crossing later in the day.

The soupy air we have in combination of the cold front is a good set up for isolated strong to severe storms to form. While most of the energy is just towards our northeast, all should be mindful of the risks of strong damaging winds, small hail, lightning, and torrential rainfall. It’ll certainly be a day to stay weather aware. Luckily our risk is on the lower side and widespread severe storms are not expected.

Saturday evening, showers and storms remain possible right through Sunday morning. Winds will be elevated form the west 10-15mph with gusts on the ridgelines pushing slightly higher. This will mark the passage of the cold front with temps remaining steady in the low to mid 60s.

Sunday morning showers continue to push through the region from northwest to southeast. As the slow moving front exits the region in the afternoon, scattered showers will work their way southeast. A breezy day that will bring some changes as the front leave. Cooler and drier air will start to filter in helping ease the rain as we begin to dry out late into the evening. Highs make their way into the upper 70s before we drop back into the low 60s for the overnight hours under clearing skies.

Labor Day, Monday, is looking fantastic without the humidity of the day past and more and more sunshine as the day enters the afternoon. Highs only in the upper 70s will be a nice change from the heat and humidity. With clearing skies overnight lows drop back into the cool upper 50s.

Tuesday high pressure towards the north & west continues to pull in cooler and drier air. A cool morning with equally cool afternoon as highs top out in the mid to upper 70s. Blue skies and sunshine for the fall preview feel. Lows dip back into the low to mid 50s to help give our ACs a rest.

Wednesday is cooler yet with mostly blue skies and sunshine to warm up into the low 70s. A few spots in the mountains will find themselves stuck in the upper 60s all afternoon. September really starting off feeling more like October.

Thursday winds change direction out of the west to help boost afternoon temps. A fair bit of sunshine aids in highs pushing into the mid and upper 70s with only fair weather clouds expected for the afternoon for a beautiful day.

Friday will be a nice day for those that are trying to hold onto the summer weather. A touch of humidity and lots of sunshine will help temps push into the low 80s for the lowlands, upper 70s for the mountains.

In your extended forecast, next weekend is looking to turn unsettled as a few showers return to the region. September, October, and November are typically are driest months based on climate averages so the rain will be welcomed but not enough to dig us out of the hole the summer left us in regarding drought conditions. At least temps look to remain near average in the upper 70s as we being the downward slide to fall average temps in the low 70s by the end of the month.
