August 2024: A look back at last month’s weather
By Joe Fitzwater,
Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month:
Temperatures in August
Warmest High Temperature : 90 degrees (August 30th)
Coolest High Temperature : 63 degrees (August 20th) – record cool high temperature for that day!
Coolest Low Temperature : 44 degrees (August 21st and 22nd)
Warmest Low Temperature : 68 degrees (August 2nd and 8th)
Overall, we were only slightly above average in terms of temperature for the month of August – even though the first nine days were all above average, we had a major cooldown around the 20th that featured a record cool high temperature of 63 degrees on August 20th!
Perhaps the biggest story of August weather-wise was the lack of rain. Beckley had the fourth driest August in recorded history – and nearly half of the 1.22″ of rain that fell occurred over the last couple of days. Considering we were already in a moderate to severe drought in most areas heading into August, the lack of rain across the northern two-thirds of our region certainly did not help the situation.
The one area that did see wetter than average conditions was down in southern Virginia and Mercer County, along with over in Pocahontas County. Elsewhere, we were below average in rainfall, though we did see some improvements with scattered downpours at the end of the month.
The full moon for August was the Sturgeon Moon, which took place on the August 19th. Viewing was fantastic for a couple of days, especially following the full moon with mostly clear skies in place. This moon is also known as the Blue Moon because it is the third of four full moons in a single season. The fourth moon will occur right before the autumn equinox. This occurs about once every 2.7 years
August 2024 Weather in Photos with #WeatherTogether
What is #WeatherTogether?
Launched in 2022, #WeatherTogether is a dedicated community photo album hosted by 59News and StormTracker 59 to allow viewers to submit weather photos directly to us that we can share on all our platforms on-air or online. These photos are also showcased in our web-based photo album on our site for all to see and enjoy! Any photo of interesting weather, storm damage, snowfall, pets playing in puddles or snow and the likes are all welcomed! We hope to use this to showcase the beauty of the two Virginias through the eyes of our viewers and the vastly dynamic weather we see because we think there is no place more beautiful than here.
