A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California Tuesday night, setting off a wave of aftershocks that could be felt more than 100 miles away.

The earthquake hit about 19 miles southwest of Bakersfield at 9:09 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .

The quake had a very shallow depth and was felt across much of Southern California. Reports of shaking were received from as far away as Los Angeles, about 104 miles southeast.

The earthquake set off a rapid series of aftershocks. The first measured at magnitude 4.5 less than a minute later, followed by a magnitude 3 aftershock at 9:14 p.m., a magnitude 4 at 9:17 p.m. and a magnitude 3.8 just a few second later.

So far, there have been more than 50 aftershocks -- 19 of which measured magnitude 3 or higher, which is strong enough to be felt nearby. The "energetic aftershock series" is expected to last through the next week.

"According to our forecast, there is a 21% chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5, which can be damaging, within the next week. There will likely be smaller aftershocks within the next week, with up to 40 magnitude 3 or higher aftershocks," the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage. Following the earthquake, the Los Angeles Fire Department said it completed a strategic survey of the city and everything was clear.

"No damage or injuries were reported and normal operational mode has resumed," the department said in a statement .

The National Weather Service says there is no tsunami threat.
