Detroit teen discovers gun, accidentally shoots himself: police

DETROIT (WWJ) A Detroit teen is recovering after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun on the city’s west side, police said.

Detroit Police (DPD) told WWJ the teen discovered the handgun and fired it by accident, injuring himself. It happened on Rutherford near Kendall, in the area of Greenfield and Schoolcraft, on Saturday (8/24) around 3:20 p.m.

The boy was rushed to the hospital. His condition was not released, but a DPD spokesperson said he “appears to be alright.”

The circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation

It’s unclear if he was alone at the time, or if an adult was at the home.
