    Memorial Day service held on Longmeadow town green

    LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Heads bowed and flags at half staff as the Longmeadow community gathered to pay tribute to fallen American military personnel this Memorial Day.

    West Springfield remember fallen heroes with Memorial Day service

    According to government data, over 1.3 million Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. A sacrifice being solemnly remembered in cities and towns all over the country and here in Western Massachusetts.

    The Town of Longmeadow hosted its 154th Memorial Day ceremony at the town green which included patriotic music, prayer and remarks.

    “May we not only experience peace from war, but may we experience peace in all relationships that shape our lives and our world.”

    It was a short ceremony on the town green in Longmeadow, lasting about a half hour but it’s one that’ll have a lasting impact on all of the attendees. the dozens of people who came out to remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

    Margaret Cohn of Longmeadow told 22News, “I like the fact that it’s a community coming together to remember because if you have someone in your family who passed, who served, it’s wonderful to remember them in your heart and mind. But I think it’s more important that the community remembers and bears responsibility surviving veterans, families of veterans who have passed.”

    “Freedom is not free. We don’t have it because somebody wrote a script or wrote a book. We have it because people acted and they acted in the cause of freedom,” said Early Godfrey, Commander of the American Legion Post 175.
