HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A plan is set to go before the Holyoke School Committee mapping out how the school system will transition out of its receivership.

“As we go through this process… have faith in the school committee that we are always putting forth the students first,” says Mildred Lefebvre of the Holyoke City Council.

After nine years, an end to the Holyoke Public School receivership is in sight and the transition plan is set to hit the ground running in September. But first, a presentation to map out this exit will be held before the school committee, which is slated for next Monday.

For months now, the state’s Department of Education has been meeting with a subcommittee in an effort to bolster the Holyoke School Committee during this transition.

The transition plan will consist of:

    • Training
    • Professional development requirements
    • Addressing “major work streams of school district governance”
      • Including Superintendent Evaluation, Superintendent Hiring, Finance and Budget, and Policy Development

“It’s really about building the school committee’s capability to move forward and perform their duty as any other school committee,” Lefebvre explained.

The School Committee will seek out interested community members to participate in a Community Advisory Team that will work with the school committee during this process.

This meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 19th, and is open to the public via Zoom at 6 p.m. For more information, click here.
