First day of school for Springfield students

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Students in Springfield Public Schools are back in the classroom, ready to learn and take on the new school year.

To kick off the first day of school the Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools visited the staff and students at Duggan Academy.

School Principal Michael Calvanese told 22News that there’s a lot in store for this school year and he says the transition back to school is going well so far.

“It’s going smooth like we never left but we are back kids coming in with smiles, teachers coming in happy, administrators ready to rock and roll and we are happy to have everyone back and get back at it,” said Calvanese. According to Calvanese, the academy has an early college program, a facility upgrade, and a new sixth-grade class.

“I am looking forward to an amazing school year looking forward to the gains and the academic growth that our students will exhibit throughout the school year,” said Dr. Sonia Dinnall, the superintendent of Springfield Public Schools.

Dr. Dinnall says with dedicated staff members and supportive families for these students, it will be a successful school year for everyone.
