HADLEY, Mass (WWLP) – One local organization hosted a meet and greet event to help to clear the shelters in our area.

“It’s amazing, it’s the best thing you could ever do,” said founder of Better Together Dog Rescue, Jenny Franz.

Better Together Dog Rescue hosted a meet and greet dog event with their rescue dogs in attendance to allow people to meet the dogs and the dogs to meet a potential new family.

“The more dogs we get adopted, the more dogs we can bring in from other shelters and get them rescued as well,” said Franz.

Franz said while these dogs are all ready, any dog entering a new home needs to adjust.

“Dogs take time to settle in. They need decompression. They need trust. Give them a little bit of time and they are going to give you the world,” said Franz.

Whether your new dog is a puppy or an older dog, she had one big tip for the transition into your home.

“Crate training is the best way to go for any new dog in the home. It keeps them safe, it gives them a safe place to stay,” said Franz.

All of the dogs at the meet and greet are ready for adoption and to find their forever home. Just like little Risotto, who has already been adopted.

One family who came to the event, found the perfect match.

“I’m very excited, I always wanted a puppy or a kitten, and I think Daphne will be a good fit,” said Sammi Hicks who came with her family from Shutesbury to meet the dogs.

At Better Together Dog Rescue, fees normally cost $600 which includes all of the vet necessities, spade/neutering, the state isolation requirement, transporting the rescue from Texas or Tennessee and more. But on Saturday, as part of the Clear the Shelters initiative, the price was only $300 for a dog older than one years old.

With some money saved, Sammi told 22News she’s excited to do a little bit of shopping for her newest sibling. “We already have a few treats and food but I would like to get her a toy, like a cute little chew toy or something.”

As the rescue’s name suggest, they believe humans and dogs are better together.
