EXPLAINER: How many summer weekends had rain this year?

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Meteorological Summer has come to an end, now that the region has reached September 1st. 22News is working for you with a look at this past summer and how much rain we received.

Last year we had nine weekends of rain in summer, and one of the rainiest months we had seen here in western Massachusetts in July 2023. This summer we also had 9 weekends of rain during the Meteorological summer. We had 10.33 inches of rain in total. That pales in comparison to last year, as July 2023 almost had that same amount of rain.

Less rain, but the same amount of frequency as last year. This year we had a decent amount of heat to contend with. Last year we had one heat wave throughout the whole year. In 2024 we had four. Multiple of them were over three days, which is the criteria for a heat wave.

In 2024 western Massachusetts also had 21 days with temperatures over 90 degrees. That’s about three whole weeks of sweltering temperatures!
