Tis the season to start shopping at the Farmers Market. The Yadkin Farmers Market officially opened for the season on Tuesday with plenty of fresh produce on hand, plus other locally-made goodies such as baked items, handmade candles and more.

The market will operate now through Oct. 7 with hours on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the shelter located at 1141 Tennessee St. in Yadkinville.

Nick Ring of Ring Farm in Hamptonville was among the vendors at the market for opening day with a table full of fresh romaine lettuce. As the season goes on, Ring said he will have beets, carrots, kale and gourmet mushrooms.

Penny Efird and Sammy Kieffer of Sammy’s Baked Goods were also at the market offering an array of delectable treats including pecan tarts, sour cream pound cake, German chocolate cake and more. Their Facebook page will provide weekly updates on what baked goods they will have available at the markets each week.

Also offering a sweet spring treat — strawberries, was Holly Miller of Mocksville. She said the season for strawberries is expected to last at least four or five more weeks. Her favorite thing to make with fresh strawberries is ice cream. She said it’s a Sunday tradition at her house.

“As soon as strawberries hit we start making ice cream,” she said.

Vendors at the market will expand their offerings throughout the summer as more produce comes in season. For weekly updates visit the Yadkin Farmers Market Facebook page.
