Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu (52) attempts to make a leaping catch of a home run hit by New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera (not pictured) during the second inning at Fenway Park.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu almost made one of the most incredible catches in the history of legendary Fenway Park Saturday against the rival New York Yankees. The key word being almost.

In the top of the second inning, Abreu appeared to rob Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera of a home run while falling head-over-heels backward into the left-field stands. Only when he looked in his glove was the ball wasn't there.

With Massachusetts' own Casey Affleck and Matt Damon in the television booth commentating on the action, most of the crowd thought Abreu had made the catch. However, after a brief moment of uncertainty, umpires ruled Cabrera's hit a round-tripper.

Replays show that Cabrera did indeed catch the ball. Nevertheless, following his collision with the left-field seats, which were mostly empty, the ball jarred loose.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports confirmed this theory after witnessing Abreu discussing the play with teammates.

"He thought his lower back hit one chair, and then his arm hit another chair or the back of that chair," Rosenthal said on the broadcast . "He was unclear exactly what happened, but that's what he thought—back hits one part of a chair, arm hits another."

Abreu was mere inches, or a softer landing, away from making arguably the catch of the year and perhaps one that would fill highlight reels for years to come. However, despite his fearless efforts, the play will instead look like any other home run in the stat sheet.
