Reds All-Star SP keeps throwing up on the mound

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene pitched another gem on Tuesday night, limiting the St. Louis Cardinals to one run on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings in a 4-1 victory.

After showing glimpses of brilliance over his first two MLB seasons, the flamethrower has put it all together in 2024 to show why he was the second overall pick in 2017.

Greene is 9-4 with a 1.02 WHIP and 162 strikeouts over 143 1/3 innings pitched while posting the third-best ERA (2.83) in the National League and best wins above replacement (WAR) for pitchers (5.3) and hits per nine innings mark (5.84). He's a dark-horse NL Cy Young candidate and was a first-time All-Star this summer, but for at least the second time this season on Tuesday, he lost his lunch on the mound.

According to MLB.com's John Denton, Greene has evidently gotten sick on the bump "several times" this campaign.

The 25-year-old's fifth-inning hurl on Tuesday joined a growing list of vomiting events.

Greene also threw up during the first inning of an outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Reds manager David Bell said after Tuesday's win that he wasn't worried about his ace's recurring vomits during starts.

"I think he feels better after it happens. I think a lot of us feel like throwing up during the game sometimes and it doesn't come out so maybe he just feels better after that," Bell said, per Stephen Douglas of Sports Illustrated .

According to an Associated Press and ESPN report , Greene said he felt good during Tuesday's outing.

"My body felt really good," he said. "(I was) able to get to all of my pitches. My release point felt great. Just felt super athletic and loose."

It may not be pretty, but the Reds will keep taking Greene's bizarre scenes on the mound if he continues to produce.
