Giants QB Tommy DeVito addresses uncertain future

New York Giants backup quarterback Tommy DeVito warned earlier this summer the team would be taking a "gamble" by placing him on their practice squad and allowing other clubs to sign him to their active rosters following the preseason.

DeVito spoke ahead of what could be his last appearance in a Big Blue jersey about an uncertain future.

"It’s not my decision," DeVito directly said while speaking with reporters on Thursday, as Jared Schwartz of the New York Post shared. "It’s not in my hands. So for me, it’s just to continue, every time I’m out on the field, showing what I proved really to myself, first and foremost, that I belong somewhere in the NFL. Honestly, I want to be with the Giants, but when I’m out there on the field, I just continue to try to get out and get better each play and every day."

With QB2 Drew Lock nursing a strained oblique that could keep him unavailable through New York's regular-season opener versus the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8, DeVito could take just about every snap for the Giants in their preseason finale against the New York Jets on Saturday night. However , the Giants eventually may have to pick one of the two to serve as Daniel Jones' backup unless the club can fit all three signal-callers on their active roster in September.

A New Jersey native, DeVito became a popular fan-favorite and sparked Internet memes when he won three of his first four starts last season as an undrafted rookie. While he showed some promise across a handful of performances and ultimately went 3-3 as a starter, the Giants gave Lock $5M in guaranteed money this past March.

"I don’t know if the word is 'worried,'" DeVito added about where he'll call home next month. "I think I’ve always carried confidence about myself. I’ve always just tried to go out each and every day and tried to play my best and be my best each day on the field, whether it was last year or this year, no matter what happened. Because last year was last year . It’s in the past. We’re moving on to what is here now."

It shouldn't be forgotten that the Giants may decide to sit a healthy Jones at any point this fall to ensure they can escape his contract in March 2025. Such a scenario playing out could result in head coach Brian Daboll wanting to get additional looks at DeVito before Week 18.
