The New Mexico Lobos thought they were turning the corner from last year's dismal 4-8 record with new head coach Bronco Mendenhall at the helm. It might not be that easy, though.

New Mexico was up 31-14 at the start of the fourth quarter against FCS Montana State in Saturday's Week 0 matchup when the worst-case scenario unfolded.

Montana State scored three straight touchdowns without New Mexico having any answer for their offensive explosion.

It didn't help that the winds in Albuquerque picked up considerably as the fourth quarter got underway, blowing a New Mexico field-goal attempt wide with nine minutes remaining that could have potentially staved off Montana State's developing comeback.

With just under five minutes to play and Montana State trailing 31-21, Bobcats running back Adam Jones broke loose and ran like wind, taking the rock 93 yards to the house to put his team within three.

After a crucial dropped pass on their next possession, New Mexico was forced to defend another offensive onslaught — ultimately failing as Montana State took the lead with just 10 seconds remaining on a four-yard rushing touchdown by Scottre Humphrey.

New Mexico couldn't find a miracle of its own with its final possession, falling 35-31 to Montana State. While this was an FCS team defeating a FBS team, Bobcats were are the No.4-ranked team in the FCS Coaches Poll and were actually favored by 13.5 points entering Saturday's game.

Up next for each team, New Mexico will travel to No. 21 Arizona on Aug. 31 while Montana State will go to Utah Tech.
