Should Cowboys take chance on four-time Pro Bowl RB?

Dalvin Cook with the Vikings in 2023.

The Dallas Cowboys running back room is one of the team's biggest holes heading into the season, but should they take a risk on a veteran who may be declining?

According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, RB Dalvin Cook flew to Dallas on Monday to meet with the Cowboys. Pelissero added Cook says, "He feels the best he has in years" after hitting the weight room this offseason.

In 2023, the former Minnesota Vikings star was disappointing in 15 regular-season games with the New York Jets, rushing for a career-low 214 rushing yards and zero touchdowns on 67 carries.

After he went unclaimed on waivers, the Baltimore Ravens signed Cook before the playoffs. He only had eight carries for 23 yards in one postseason game.

Cook underwent shoulder surgery last offseason, which probably hampered him. From 2019-2022, the former second-round pick made four consecutive Pro Bowls and surpassed 1,000 rushing yards each season.

The Cowboys may think Cook's offseason regimen could help him regain his elite form. However, he turned 29 on Aug. 10, and RBs' production typically dips as they age.

Dallas is somewhat desperate, though. Trevor Sikkema of Pro Foobtall Focus ranked their RB room last in the league.

After letting former Pro Bowler Tony Pollard walk in free agency, RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle will probably split carries. Elliott rushed for a career-low 642 yards in 17 games with the New England Patriots last season, while Dowdle registered 361 rushing yards in 16 games with the Cowboys.

Dallas' depth at running back raises concerns. Still, they'd better be sure Cook is poised to bounce back in 2024. Otherwise, he wouldn't be an upgrade for their backfield.
