Russell Wilson isn't focused on 'anything old' as Steelers' QB1

On Wednesday, the Steelers officially named Russell Wilson their starting quarterback heading into Week 1 of the 2024 season.

Pittsburgh provides the fresh start that many believe the 35-year-old needs to prove himself after a disappointing two years in Denver. During those two years, he went 11-19 as a starter before being benched for quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

However, Wilson revealed he feels no more pressure to prove himself heading into his 13th season.

“I feel like that every day you try to prove yourself," Wilson said . "There was adversity and you overcome the adversity and move on. … I'm not focused on anything old or anything ahead. I'm just focused on right now."

He has seen a lot of football and knows better than most that living in the past will not help his current endeavors.

Instead, he wants to be the best player he can be on any given day and the rest will take care of itself.

"Every day you try and be your best," Wilson added . "I think we're always competing to be our best as players. I think that's the one thing I've learned ever since my rookie year. You come out to the field and you're trying to be the best version of you every day."

That mindset seems to have worked out quite well for him since joining the Steelers in March.

It helped him beat out fellow quarterback Justin Fields for the starting job, and now, he has one last chance to raise a Lombardi Trophy.

Wilson seems confident Pittsburgh can do just that this season.

“I came here to be a Pittsburgh Steeler to help us win another Super Bowl," Wilson concluded . "That's the bottom line. That's the focus. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. I believe in this football team. We believe in each other and we gotta do the work and that's just what it is."

If Wilson can help deliver the Steelers' seventh Super Bowl championship, he'll likely extend his NFL career by a couple more years, but if not, this may be his final ride.
