On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, a retired member of the Yonkers Police Department came across a concerning scene at the city docks along the Hudson River. Glasses, shoes, and a note were left behind on the pier in the downtown waterfront area. The man notified YPD dispatch as the retired officer feared an attempted suicide.

    A Speedy Rescue

The AWARE Crime Control Center officers promptly reviewed several cameras to locate a distressed person, as time was of the essence. Further observation led to the determination that the female jumped into the water a short time before.

Based on the location where she jumped into the water, officers from the 3rd and 4th Precincts, along with our Emergency Service Unit, responded to the area in an attempt to save her. First responders located a female trapped underneath the dock.

ESU expertly developed a rescue plan, put on their necessary gear, and jumped into the water to save her. Officers Park, Ascolillo, Thomas, and Fernandez ensured the safety of the dive team, officers Rotondo, Waldron, and Sgt Barca, by maintaining their safety lines as they entered the water.

The team successfully rescued the woman and brought her onto the dock for medical attention. She recovered to stable condition after emergency services transferred her to a local hospital for further care. Once again, our Yonkers officers heroically worked together to perform another incredible rescue.

Precious moments were saved thanks to the AWARE Crime Control Centers quick location capabilities. Otherwise, time would have certainly been wasted in a large, extensive search of the Hudson River.
