The pedestrian struck dead has been identified as an assisted living resident who was walking home, the York County Coroner's Office explained on Friday, Aug. 2.

Terry Zeigler, 79 of Autumn House East in the 2600 block of East Market Street, Springettsbury Township, died at WellSpan York Hospital at 9:53 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, as detailed in the coroner's release.

Zeigler was struck in the "2100 East Market Street while attempting to cross the street to return to his residence at Autumn House East," as stated in the coroner's release. There are crosswalks at the intersection as seen on Google Maps Street View.

Officers were called to the collision at East Market Street and Northern Way at 9:05 p.m., according to the police release.

The coroner's release explained the situation as follows:

"Reportedly, Ziegler routinely would sign out of the facility to walk around the East York area. Zeigler had been using a walker at the time of the incident. On the date of his death, he neglected to sign out and left the facility, which had reported him missing to police. Zeigler was wearing dark clothes and was not easily seen at the time of the incident."

Deputy Coroner Karen Frank went to the hospital to investigate and certify the death. There was no autopsy but a routine toxicology test was performed. His cause of death was "Multiple Blunt Force Trauma due to being Struck by a Motor Vehicle" and the manner was accidental, according to the coroner's release. His next of kin has been notified.

The Springettsbury Township Police Department continues to investigate this fatal crash. The driver is cooperating with the investigation.
