Nolan Donald Grove, a 14-year-old from Red Lion accused of shooting and killing 12-year-old Kain Heiland on April 1, 2023, who will remain charged as an adult, is currently being held in the suicide-resistant section of juvenile detention.

Grove is charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person and firearms offenses, and his attorney, Farley Holt is in the process of requesting that Grove be granted house arrest while on bail.

Last week, members of Grove's family took the stand, saying that a return to home would be the best thing for his mental health.

His mother, Danielle Nace, who lives with her husband John and retired parents on their property in Red Lion, testified that no one at the property keeps firearms in the home and that she owns three firearms, which are stored in Holt's office. Nace's father owns several, which are stored in West Virginia.

Along with her parents, Nace testified that Grove, who suffers from ADHD and PTSD would be under the primary care of her and her parents as her truck driver husband is often away for months at a time.

Holt argued that the juvenile detention center where Grove is currently housed in segregation along with several other juveniles facing high-profile charges, is affecting his mental health.

Brian Horner, supervisor of classification at the York County Prison, testified that Grove was placed under the suicide watch last Monday and resides alone in his cell, equipped with a blanket, where he takes his daily meals and meets daily with mental health professionals.

Though Grove never made any threats or attempts to commit suicide, Horner testified that policies and procedures are put in place for juveniles in the prison system. "Given his age and the severity of the charges, he was placed on a suicide status the same as any inmate at any age," Horner said.

Throughout his first week under suicide watch, Holt argued, Grove was only allowed to shower once before arriving to court.

Horner said Grove could have asked for a shower prior to that, and in the future he would be able to shower upon request.

If convicted, Grove could face a maximum statutory sentence of 40 years in prison.

Grove's bail hearing will continue and is currently scheduled for Friday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. before York County Common Pleas President Judge Maria Musti Cook.
