Friends of Camp Security received a welcome boost to its efforts to unearth and preserve the site of a Revolutionary War prisoner of war camp in Springettsbury Township.

Earlier this month, the National Park Service announced the organization would receive a grant of $149,501.59 to fund its project, titled “The Pen at Camp Security: Mapping a Revolutionary War Prison Camp Stockade."

The Friends of Camp Security was among eight projects that shared $1.8 million allocated to the American Battlefield Protection Program, according to a news release issued by the park service. Other projects included preservation of Civil War and Revolutionary War sites and establishment of a site by the United Mine Workers of America to memorialize the Colorado Coalfield War of 1914 in Ludlow, Colorado. (That war began when National Guard troops, on orders from the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, opened fire on striking mine workers, killing 21 - including 11 children - and touching off 10 days of warfare in Colorado, according to the Park Service.)

Friends of Camp Security, in announcing the award, said, "This will go a long way towards helping Friends of Camp Security achieve its archeological goals."

Volunteers and archeologists have been exploring the site, located in a farm field off Locust Grove Road, for years now and have located what they believe are post holes that reveal the dimensions of the stockade that housed British Revolutionary War prisoners between 1781 and 1783.
