YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Summer is the time for aspiring musicians to shine.

YSU’s Dana School of Music is hosting a summer music camp and vocal performance clinic this week. There are 24 musicians and eight vocalists from high school and middle school.

Each student is immersing themselves in music. Some may want to learn how to improvise, some want to learn to write music. Others desire to improve their technical skills. The camp allows them to try different things.

“We’re trying to stretch their comfort zone, but we’re trying to do it in a fun and safe way so that the students really feel like they’re engaged. They’re pushing their boundaries but at the same time, there’s not threat,” said Joe Carucci, director of the Dana School of Music.

The camp includes ensemble rehearsals, individual lessons, and performances. It runs through Friday.
