Lamarie Smith, 24, received the sentence in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court following guilty pleas June 18 to charges of involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault for the Feb. 29 beating death of DeeAnna Summers , 29, of Charleston, W.Va.

Smith was arrested Feb. 29 after he called police and told them that he was in a fight with a woman at a home on Victor Avenue on the East Side and that she was not breathing.

Summers later died at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Summers’ godmother, Angel Mitchell, told the judge Smith had a history of abusing Summers and threatening her family. She said Summers stayed with Smith to protect her family.

“She kept coming here and seeing him to keep us safe because of all the threats,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said Summers was killed the day before the birthday of one of Mitchell’s sons, and his birthday will always be associated with the death of his mother.

“He left two kids without a mother and a family without their daughter,” Mitchell said.
