FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A driver was arrested over the weekend after allegedly driving under the influence and subsequently being submerged in a canal, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers say their graveyard units responded to an area in Fresno County over the weekend for a vehicle submerged in a canal after they say the driver took the “back roads” to avoid detection after drinking.

Cal Fire and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to support CHP. According to officers, the driver was pulled out of the water safely before getting arrested under suspicion of DUI.

Because of this, the California Highway Patrol warns the public that drinking and driving is never a good idea -“no matter what roads you take.”
