( WJET/W F XP ) – A temporary boil water order has been put in place for two New York areas.

According to a release, the Chautauqua County Health Department has issued a boil water order for all Village of Fredonia and the Town of Pomfret water customers.

This comes after a scheduled cleaning of the tank at a water treatment plant resulted in water with levels of turbidity contaminating the distribution system that could contain harmful microbes.

The release states that all Fredonia water customers “must boil water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and making coffee until further notice. Water must be brought to a rolling boil for one minute then cooled prior to use.”

Residents need to use boiled or bottled water to wash dishes by hand then followed by air drying the dishes. Home dishwashers that reach a temperature of 170⁰F and have a full dry cycle do not need boiled or bottled water. The water may be used for bathing as long as it is not consumed. The water is safe for laundry.

Once turbidity levels have fallen, officials will collect water samples on consecutive days to ensure the water is safe and will notify the public with the latest updates on Chautauqua County’s website .

For more information, residents should call the Village of Fredonia at (716) 679-2307.
