    Hey, Muskingum County: Here's what you need to know to start your week

    ZANESVILLE − Larkin Spencer, a student at Bishop Rosecrans High School, has been selected as a national youth correspondent to attend the Washington Journalism and Media Conference July 7 to 12 at George Mason University. She was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest in excellence in journalism and media and media studies. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and hear from a variety of speakers in the journalism field.

    ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville Times Recorder recently won three awards from the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors Awards for 2024, for work in 2023. Placement of winners from first to third place will be announced later this month. Sam Blackburn won for best sport columnist, best sports feature writer and best business writer.

    COLUMBUS − The City of Zanesville has been awarded a $2.11 million loan at 3.48% interest for 20 years for construction and improvements to three water storage tanks to extend their useful life. Funding is from the Ohio Water Development Authority.

    ROSEVILLE − The Muskingum County Engineer's Office has announced that Okey Road will be closed for 45 days starting July 8 for a bridge replacement from Clay Pike Road to Tumblin Road.

    Sonora Road will be closed for a culvert replacement on July 8 from Norfield Road to AutoZone, about 600 feet from the railroad tracks.

    Norfield Road will be closed July 9 for a culvert replacement from Sonora Road to Ohio 93, about 50 feet west of Sonora Road.

    ZANESVILLE − Zanesville City Schools will have a special meeting of the board of education to discuss personnel at 4:30 p.m. July 9, at the administration office. The regular board meeting for July has been moved to 4:30 p.m. July 23 at the administration office.

    NEW CONCORD − East Muskingum Local Schools will have a regular meeting of the board of education at 4 p.m. July 11 in the Muskie Room of John Glenn High School, 13120 John Glenn School Road.

    ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum Valley Park District will meet in regular session at noon July 9 in the visitors center of Mission Oaks Gardens, 1720 Euclid Ave.

    ZANESVILLE − The Green Valley Pickers will perform for Pickin' in the Pavilion at 7 p.m. July 14 at the Rix Mills Presbyterian Church. A church ice cream social starts at 5 p.m. Bring lawn chairs. Call 740-674-4888 or 740-607-7849 for more information.

    ZANESVILLE − Ohio University Zanesville is holding a series of career development workshops designed to empower individuals with tools necessary for professional success. Sessions will be led by Summer Jacobs. Topics will be tips and tricks for interviewing on July 9, finding jobs and internships on July 16 and developing a resume on July 30.     HOPEWELL − Hopewell Township Trustees will have an alternative budget meeting at 7:15 p.m. July 9 at the township hall on Hopewell National Road in Mt. Sterling. The regular monthly meeting follows at 7:30 p.m.

    NASHPORT − Licking Township Trustees will have a public hearing at 6 p.m. July 11 at the township hall, 7675 Black Run Road, Nashport. It's regarding the budget for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2025.

    ZANESVILLE − The CARE Team at Ohio University Zanesville is holding youth mental health first aid courses from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2 and 7 in Room W110 of Elson Hall. The sessions are aimed at empowering educators to support mental health and wellbeing of their students. For more information visit ohio.edu/zanesville.

    NELSONVILLE − The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio has awarded two Mandy McGlumphy Social Work Scholarships. The awards are for students pursuing a degree in social work.

    The winners were JayLynn McClarren and Sarah Alfman. McClarren is a 2020 graduate of Cambridge High School and is pursuing a master's degree in social work with a focus on mental health at West Virginia University. Alfman is a 2024 graduate of Miller High School and will be attending Ohio University Zanesville this fall.
