The Indianapolis Colts offense took a big blow on Wednesday, when 2 nd -year receiver Josh Downs was tackled and injured during 7-on-7 drills by safety Nick Cross.

Downs has reportedly suffered a high ankle sprain and will more than likely miss some games. It’s a blow for the Colts and Downs, who shined as a rookie and looked to play a big part of the Colts offense going into his sophomore season. For Cross, it’s a bone-headed mistake; contact in 7-on-7 drills is highly discouraged, and to not only take a teammate to the ground but also injure them during those drills is a worst-case scenario. Cross got appropriately chewed out by head coach Shane Steichen on the field after the play and has also been taking his lumps on social media as well.

The Colts really cannot afford this type of self-inflicted wound. They are, by and large, an unproven team, and Downs proved last season that he could be a reliable weapon. Losing him to begin the year, especially with the Texans waiting in Week 1, could really impact the Colts quest to avoid another slow start, and to finally win an opening game for the first time since 2014.
