Last year the NFLPA and NFL agreed to terms on allowing franchises to elevate a third quarterback towards the gameday roster from the practice squad for an unlimited amount of times.

Today, the NFLPA has changed its stance.

This is significant news because there was an argument being made around Indianapolis on whether Sam Ehlinger would stick on the Colts 53-man roster because of the unlimited amount of elevations a team could make. Additionally, that emergency quarterback did not count towards the game day roster.

Undrafted free agent, Jason Bean, flashed a lot in preseason action. Over the weekend the Colts released Kedon Slovis. That leaves Anthony Richardson, Joe Flacco, Sam Ehlinger, and Jason Bean as the quarterback’s on the Colts roster.

    • Sam Ehlinger – 17/26 (65.4%) 166 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception | 3 rush attempts 25 yards, 0 touchdowns
    • Jason Bean – 15/19 (78.9%) 197 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception | 11 rush attempts 53 yards, 2 touchdowns

Many believed that Ehlinger would be waived and then if he went unclaimed, he would end up on the Colts practice squad as the emergency QB. Do Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen change their minds on that now? Could that have been the reason why the Colts released Ronnie Harrison Jr. on Sunday? Both are possible.

Ballard has a history of keeping three quarterbacks on the roster since Andrew Luck’s retirement. Personally, I think it’s important for the Colts to do so. Richardson is a mobile quarterback that could easily get banged up and Flacco is 39 years-old. Having a third quarterback on the roster isn’t the worst idea.

Keeping three QB’s has major impact on other positions. Indianapolis has yet to put Samson Ebukam on injured reserve after tearing his achilles and Jelani Woods is expected to miss four months following foot surgery. It seems likely that both would be added to IR with Woods being one player they designate to return.

On Monday’s Query & Company, Jimmy Cook and James Boyd reacted to this news and then talked to CBS4 & FOX59’s Mike Chappell about Sam Ehlinger’s future with the Indianapolis Colts.
