Man Sentenced to 108 Months for Violent Robbery: 14 Shots Fired

New Brunswick resident receives federal prison term for involvement in a violent robbery where the victim was shot 14 times.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Jonathan Rosales, 23, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was sentenced today to 108 months in prison for his participation in a 2020 robbery attempt that resulted in the victim being shot 14 times, announced U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Rosales previously pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery and attempted Hobbs Act robbery. U.S. District Judge Robert Kirsch imposed the sentence today in Trenton federal court.

On December 28, 2020, Rosales, along with accomplices Saul Peralta and Giovanni Hoyos-Jaimes, attempted to rob an individual in New Brunswick. During the robbery, the victim was shot 14 times, sustaining serious injuries. Both Peralta and Hoyos-Jaimes have also pleaded guilty for their roles in the incident. Peralta was sentenced to 78 months in prison on May 22, 2024, while Hoyos-Jaimes is scheduled for sentencing on July 24, 2024.

In addition to the 108-month prison term, Rosales was sentenced to three years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The investigation leading to Rosales's sentencing was conducted by special agents of the FBI in Newark, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy, with assistance from the New Brunswick Police Department, led by Chief Vincent Sabo, and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, under Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin, Co-Chief of the General Crimes Unit in Newark, represented the government in this case.

This sentencing highlights the federal commitment to prosecuting violent crimes and ensuring justice for victims of such serious offenses.
