    Who's playing?

Kyle Shanahan has already said that few starters will play in the preseason opener. So don't expect see any of the 49ers' stars on show. First-round pick Ricky Pearsall is also probably unlikely to play having recently dealt with a shoulder issue.

Instead, this will be an audition for those at the bottom of the roster to further their case for a place on the 53-man roster, while Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen competing to take a lead in the battle for the QB2 spot.

    Three players to watch

    • Dominick Puni: The rookie third-round pick has enjoyed a very strong training camp and put himself in contention to start at right guard. An impressive debut would do his hopes the power of good.
    • Dee Winters: One of the most competitive position battles is for the SAM linebacker spot on base downs. Winters will look to use his significant athletic gifts to put himself in the box seat after excelling on the practice field.
    • Renardo Green: It's unclear if Isaac Yiadom will play, but his direct competition for the third cornerback role likely will. Second-round pick Green has caught the eye with his ability to play inside and out, and it will be fascinating to see how he handles his first test from an NFL opponent.
