Packers HC Matt LaFleur has hilarious answer when asked wide receiver question

Wide receiver one . That's one of the most talked about topics regarding the Green Bay Packers this offseason. And that's because the Packers have had several good players, but not a clear, dominant top pass-catching option since trading Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022.

But head coach Matt LaFleur couldn't care less about that. On Monday, he was asked about how Dontayvion Wicks fit into the number one discussion after a strong performance in the preseason opener. And his answer couldn't have been funnier.

"I wanna vomit every time I hear No. 1 receiver, to be honest with you," LaFleur half-jokingly said. "It drives me crazy. That's something that you guys talk about. I feel like we have a bunch of them."

LaFleur wasn't in the mood to talk about how the receiving room is developing. Asked about potentially using more four-WR sets, his answer wasn't that definitive either.

"Maybe we'll be a 10-personnel team. Who knows?"

The Packers have at least five receivers who have shown high-level skills in 2022 and/or 2023: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Bo Melton. Malik Heath has also done good things as a receiver and is a valuable special teamer, while former seventh-round pick Grant DuBose had a strong performance on Saturday, leading the Packers in receiving yards.

And the ability to work with so many pieces with a capable level is something that even pleases LaFleur. If it's impossible for the external public to define who the Packers primary options are, it's also hard for opposing defenses.

"Who's going to get the ball? I don't know," LaFleur added. "It frees us up from an offensive standpoint."

Grant DuBose ended the preseason opener with five receptions for 66 yards. The second receiver in yardage was Dontayvion Wicks, who had a 65-yard touchdown reception from Jordan Love. Beyond them, wide receivers Julian Hicks, Malik Heath, Bo Melton, and Samori Toure also had receptions against the Browns.

Over the last couple of seasons, the Packers have usually kept six wide receivers on the 53-man roster . That basically narrows the competition down to DuBose and Heath for the sixth spot — and maybe two or three other players for those practice squad spots.

The Green Bay Packers will have two more preseason games, important opportunities for these young players to show their value. The next one is on Sunday, against the Denver Broncos in Colorado. Then, on August 24, the Packers play the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field.
