The Buffalo Bills remain active on the free agency market. They added Ben Dinucci for some increased quarterback depth on Monday afternoon.

Mere hours after Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott spoke to the media and informed the masses that backup Shane Buechele has an injured neck after their first preseason game and would be out "for some time," and that he GM Brandon Beane would be speaking about how to address the position, they've done exactly that.

They're adding some wide receiver/special teams depth as well. A veteran wideout and return man is headed to Buffalo.

Bills sign former Patriots WR/returner Damiere Byrd

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN was first on the news.

This move follows the Bills' first preseason game where K.J. Hamlet muffed a punt. Hamler's role as a returner for Buffalo was not set in stone prior to that mistake, and now, there's even more mystery regarding that spot on the Bills roster.

Both on kickoffs and punts, there is an open competition remaining for whoever can best claim it for the Bills. Byrd will try to do that, as well as possibly play a downfield role for Josh Allen's offense.

Bills GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott both have a connection to Byrd, too.

They were still with the Carolina Panthers when Byrd arrived in 2015.

The veteran WR has made a handful of stops since exiting Carolina, including the Arizona Cardinals (2019), New England Patriots (2020), Chicago Bears (2021), Atlanta Falcons (2022), Houston Texans (2023) and Washington Commanders. He also spent time back in Carolina last year.

Let's see if he can lock down a role on special teams or offense for Buffalo.
