Why the Denver Broncos won't trade for New York Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick

It's safe to say the Denver Broncos don't have the best collection of players on the defensive side of the ball. They just don't, and they don't have the biggest names on that side of the ball either. That doesn't always equal a recipe for disaster on defense, though. Sometimes, great coaching can have a greater impact than the talent does, and that could be the case for 2024.

But because the defensive side of the ball doesn't have that star power or big-name players, fans tend to throw names of players out there that the team can go for. That's completely normal -- every fan base does it. But, there is one name that may start getting thrown out soon. And, it's my job to keep it real with you and let you know that it's not going to happen.

On Monday, NFL reporters and insiders across the league reported that former Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles , and now New York Jets edge rusher, Haason Reddick, wants to be traded from the Jets, the team that traded for him just a few months ago, before he even puts on their uniform.

Reddick has not been to training camp at all this summer for New York and is holding out on a new deal. With both sides not able to agree, he's requesting a trade. The Jets traded for him knowing that he was going into a contract year, and have yet to be able to reach an agreement on a deal. This is sparking fan bases of every NFL team to ask themselves if their team should trade for one of the best edge rushers in the league.

Well, to be blunt, no, the Broncos shouldn't. In fact, they won't.

Let's start with the contract. First, Reddick is making $14.5 million in 2024, with a $750 thousand cap hit. He's expecting a new contract, and with the Broncos having roughly $6 million in cap space. I'm not sure the Broncos would do that.

Let's also not forget about the young guys the Broncos have on the edge that they want to develop. Jonah Elliss, their rookie defensive end who played fairly well on Sunday, Baron Browning, Nik Bonitto, and Thomas Incoom are all guys that they are trying to turn into big-time pass rushers and run-stoppers.

Bringing on Reddick would not only put the Broncos in a bad salary cap situation, but it would also create a log jam at the edge positions that the Broncos just don't need with their depth.
