And with Mike Tomlin having yet to name his starter for Week 2, some think that had Fields played better, he may have flipped the odds of the QB battle in his favor:
Bart Scott Rips Justin Fields' Steelers Debut
"He [Justin Fields] fumbled it away," former Ravens LB Bart Scott said when asked about Justin Fields' chances of winning the QB#1 role on ESPN's Get Up . "If there's one thing that's not going to be tolerated in Pittsburgh, it's turning the football over. You have an outstanding running game, a new offensive line, and a tremendous defense. You can't do what he did. And it's not even the fumbles, it's how long it takes him to process. You're talking about 99 sacks over the course of the last few years."
To be fair to Fields, the two fumbles came on center-QB exchanges. Now, there is no excuse for a mistake in such a rudimentary part of the game, but center Nick Herbig took full responsibility after the loss, and both Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith placed the blame on both players.
But as Scott would add, it was more than the fumbles that left him bearish on Fields' chances of winning the starting QB role.
"He [Justin Fields] reminds me of Tim Tebow," Scott added. "We talk about burping the baby and how long it takes you to process. You can't wait for receivers to get open, you have to throw receivers open with anticipation. He doesn't throw receivers open with anticipation, which causes his offensive line's protection to break down, which causes problems in the pocket...
"...And also, ball security is job security. He has 38 fumbles since entering the NFL, that's five more than any other player. That's not acceptable. He had a tremendous opportunity with Russell Wilson being out with the calf."
Look, I'm sure it wasn't the debut that Fields was hoping for, but there were also plenty of positives when breaking down his film . He would have finished 6/6 on passing attempts had Mike Tomlin thrown his challenge flag, with Fields' accuracy, velocity, and precision on full display in limited exposure.
The Steelers close camp on Wednesday, heading back to Pittsburgh for a series of closed practices, including a joint scrimmage with the Bills on Thursday. How that day goes as well as Saturday night's game in front of the nation will be telling for Fields' depth chart projection .
