The New Orleans Saints have a QB battle brewing for the backup job behind Derek Carr. Spencer Rattler has a ton of fans around New Orleans for his exciting upside as a rookie. Jake Haener remains in the conversation, though.

NFL posts Spencer Rattler preseason highlight reel

Of course, the NFL social media is not trying to push a narrative. That being said, plenty of Saints fans will point to this type of video to describe why they believe in Rattler as the team's best option at backup QB - and potentially long-term starting QB.

His preseason was inconsistent. We cannot avoid that conversation.

Rattler completed 20 of 38 attempts for 202 passing yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 26 yards and a score. The stats do not jump off the page, but his peak plays put his unique traits on full display.

His passing TD in Week 3 of the preseason was one of the best throws by any Saints QB all preseason. He also feathered in a handful of other impressive throws during that contest that got less reaction from social media.

Rattler has a confidence and leadership quality that his teammates have found intriguing for a rookie gunslinger. Some may even call it aura for the rookie.

Meanwhile, Jake Haener was statisctically more efficient than Rattler when it comes to the preseason games. Haener went 24/43 for 270 passing yards. He was not a threat on the ground, though.

Haener has experience in the league, and he's been nothing but a professional when it comes to this backup battle. He's determined but understands the hype surrounding the rookie option.

The Saints like him as depth and may give him the nod simply since he's been in the building and understands the NFL landscape a bit more than Rattler. If that's the case, I am not sure that a backup QB competition was ever truly on the table throughout these exhibition games.

We will see how the depth chart shakes out before the Saints play the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the regular season.
