Steelers Super Bowl champ thinks Mike Tomlin's decision to 'anoint' Russell Wilson will come back to bite him

While others feel: " Bamboozled " surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers QB position, those in the know, knew it has always been Russell Wilson's job.

One of those people is two-time Super Bowl champion, and former Steelers defensive tackle Chris Hoke.

But just because he knew Russell Wilson would start, doesn't mean he thinks it's the right decision:

Hoke Questions Mike Tomlin's QB Decision

"I think Justin Fields has done as heck of a job in the preseason. I think he's shown that he could be a starting quarterback here," Hoke said on the KDKA Nightly Sports Call after the finale against the Detroit Lions. "Russell Wilson was anointed as the starting quarterback, Coach Tomlin has said since Day 1 he was in the pole position. Let's see what they do in Week 1 against the Falcons against the starters...

"...Now if they don't move the ball and they struggle for a couple of games, I think you could see them start to trickle in Justin Fields a little bit just to get things going because his element of being able to run the ball and run that zone option really opens up the game and puts defenses on their heels. There's going to be a package for him at certain times because he's too good of a player to have sit on the bench."

The only reason (though it's a big one) that Russell Wilson is starting is because of his lack of turnover potential. A team that knows they have to win on the margins, the worst thing you can do for possession-based football is...Not have the football.

And unfortunately, whatever small chance Fields did have at winning the role, was likely fumbled away in his debut following the QB-C exchanges between him and Nate Herbig.

Other than that, Fields offers a much more dynamic package given his mobility, arm talent, and improved nuance at the position.

But the ball is the program, the money maker, the key to victory, and even though it wasn't his fault, Fields was on the grass when Pittsburgh nearly had another turnover on Saturday following an early snap from C Zach Frazier.

The question that Coach T doesn't want to answer but may have to...How quickly is Justin Fields the starter if Pittsburgh's offense fails to compete?
