Recent Cowboys' signing doesn't make it past honeymoon phase

As the Dallas Cowboys trim down their roster to 53 players , we already have a surprising cut in our hands. The team is moving on from defensive end Carl Lawson, who was signed by the team this very month once the preseason was already under way.

The move is certainly unexpected as the Cowboys appeared to really need the depth at the position following Sam Williams' season-ending injury.

At the time, it was a celebrated move given the Cowboys' needs and the fact that, when healthy, Lawson has been highly productive as a pass rusher. As a complement to second-round rookie Marshawn Kneeland, Lawson appeared to be a low-risk, high-reward addition for the team.

However, that honeymoon phase didn't translate to a long stay on the Cowboys. Lawson is now out of the picture.

Could this be a roster maneuver to get Lawson on the practice squad and open up a spot for somebody else before eventually promoting the former? Perhaps. However, reports about the Cowboys hosting DE Tyus Bowser on a visit suggest they're turning the page and continuing their search for depth at the position.

A to Z Sports Dallas' morning show host Will Steele opined on Twitter/X that Lawson's preseason film versus the L.A. Chargers wasn't great and added there were questions about his effort.

By 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Cowboys will need to be at 53 players. But expect them to make more moves past the deadline as every other team gets through with its corresponding moves.
